Join us for this annual tradition featuring the VYOA’s three orchestras and chorus. VYO Senior Soloist, Connor Zwonik performs Michael Colgrass’ Timpani Concerto. Also on the program is an arrangement of ‘White Christmas’ featuring the orchestra and chorus combined as well as Leroy Anderson’s ever-popular ‘Sleigh Ride.’

The Winter Choral Concert features Madrigals from 15th century Spain and Italy as well as modern popular music set in this distinctive style. The program also showcases Shakespearean lyrics from Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, and Much Ado About Nothing in a contemporary choral triptych by Emma Lou Diemer. Experience the powerful liturgical Latin text from the Matins service set by Mozart’s teacher Giovanni Battista Martini. Finally, enjoy a set of modern Hebrew “poetic postcards” written by Hila Plitmann to her husband Eric Whitacre who sets them delicately in his Five Hebrew Love Songs.

Enjoy works celebrating the Icelandic region with Jon Leifs' Icelandic Dances and Carl Nielsen’s Saga Drøm (The Dream of Gunnar). American composer Brian Baxter’s Roots Run Deep, a tribute to the Northeast Kingdom, and Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid close out this powerful program.

“O, Freedom” celebrates the genre of the African-American spiritual and spiritual-inspired music commemorating the 60th anniversary of the civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in March 1965. The program will include works by Jim Papoulis, Rollo Dilworth, and Moses Hogan, as well as arrangements of traditional South African freedom songs. VYO Chorus members close out the season with Brahms’ Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny), Op. 54 occasionally referred to as his Little Requiem. This work is a choral setting of a poem written by Friedrich Hölderlin.

VYOA’s Young Artist Festival features three of this year’s four talented senior soloists. Emma Baker performs Bruch’s Romanze for Viola and Orchestra; John Yao performs Saint-Saens’ Concerto No. 1 in A-minor; and Jillian Reed performs Nielsen’s Flute Concerto. Also on the program is a premiere work by a current Music-COMP student. The VYO will also display its collective virtuosity in Brahms' Academic Festival Overture and Elgar's Cockaigne ("In London Town")

“Revel, My Friends” features music of friendship and personal devotion including Gaelic and seafaring songs, songs of peace and choral highlights of Gluck’s opera, Orfeo. 2014 marks an anniversary year of Gluck’s birth. The opera is testimony to the ultimate “triumph of love” retelling the fable with a more favorable, celebratory finale.
